Oscars 2023: Red carpet turns 'champagne' in color. See what happened

The for-a-long-time-now tradition of the Red Carpet in Oscar has gone through a huge shift, as it has turned into champagne.

Host Jimmy Kimmel unveiled the color of the famous red carpet that every Hollywood star will walk on at the Oscars on Sunday. The color? Champagne.

Kimmel expressed admiration for the new carpet during its unveiling outside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. He also joked that the change from the traditional red carpet was prompted by Will Smith's onstage slap of Chris Rock at last year's show.

Kimmel made light of the speculation surrounding the potential for violence at this year's event and suggested that the decision to go with a champagne-colored carpet instead of a red one demonstrated the event's confidence that no harm would come to anyone.

Since Bob Hope hosted the 33rd Academy Awards in 1961, the Oscars carpet has become an iconic red color. On Wednesday, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang joined Kimmel for the unveiling of the new champagne-colored carpet.

Kimmel joked about the intensity of the moment, as photographers and videographers crowded around to capture the carpet's debut. He even commented that he had never before done a play-by-play of carpeting.

However, once the carpet was revealed, Kimmel expressed satisfaction, stating, "Well, we did it, guys. We got the carpet. Now we have a show."

During a media press conference with Oscar show producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss, news of the champagne-colored carpet was announced, sparking a frenzy of interest.

When asked about the color change, Kirshner declined to comment.

Meanwhile, third-time Oscar host Kimmel made light of the speculation surrounding the possibility of violence at the event, joking in an interview that he had been practising martial arts since he learnt he has to host Oscars.
