Fans of Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club have got a new novel to pick up next. The novel narrates the journey of a single teen mother's boy through foster care, addiction, and child labour, among other challenges. Exclusively on "CBS Mornings," Oprah Winfrey revealed that "Demon Copperhead" by American novelist Barbara Kingsolver was her latest selection to read. While announcing the book, Winfrey stated that it is set in the mountains of the southern Appalachians and would intrigue the readers from "the very first sentence."

The coming-of-age novel was inspired by the opioid crisis and its effects on children. Kingsolver stated she wanted to tell this story because a generation of kids had been orphaned due to opioid use disorder, and it was not over for them. She said she was unsure whether readers would want to read such "a dark story," but she drew inspiration from Charles Dickens to tell the fictional story. She added that it was a "hard story" to tell. Kingsolver started writing the novel while lodging in the former home of Charles Dickens in the United Kingdom. She described the house as "a creaky old mansion on the ocean."
