Opening old wounds? Ukraine claims Chernobyl's radiation shield hit by Russian drone

Chernobyl, one of the world's worst nuclear accidents, is back in the headlines as the damaged site has been hit again by a Russian drone attack, according to claims by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has taken another interesting and ghastly turn, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claims that a Russian drone strike has hit the radiation shelter that has been protecting Chernobyl's damaged nuclear reactor for many years. The drone strike reportedly caused a fire at the site, which was extinguished later on, according to a BBC report.

Any chances of radiation leak from Chernobyl?

According to the UN's nuclear watchdog IAEA, radiation levels inside and outside the Chernobyl site still remain at normal levels, and no issues have been observed yet, suggesting that no radiation leaks have occurred from the site following the reported drone attack.

Russia denies claims

Russia has now denied the claims of a drone attack conducted by them on the Chernobyl site, saying that its 'military does not strike Ukrainian nuclear infrastructure' and the claims being made from Ukraine's end are far from reality.

Meanwhile, The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has claimed that no casualties have been reported so far in this incident, and fire safety personnel and vehicles responded within minutes of this explosion that happened in the middle of the night. IAEA is currently on high alert and is monitoring the site round the clock for any abnormalities that could possibly occur.
