One Piece’s adaptation to release on Netflix: Here’s what we know so far about upcoming live action series

Netflix is set to release a live-action version of Eiichiro Oda's popular manga ‘One Piece’. It is being produced by Tomorrow Studios, the same team behind the now-canceled Cowboy Bebop adaptation on the platform. While an official release date for the series is yet to be announced, sources suggest that it may be targeted for an April 2023 release.

The upcoming series has announced Steven Maeda as the showrunner, who has previously worked on shows like The X-Files, Day Break and Lost. In addition to Maeda, several other writers have also been confirmed to be part of the team, such as Allison Weintraub, Ian Stokes, Matt Owens, Jason Cho and more.

The first episode of the series will be directed by Marc Jobst, who has directed episodes for popular shows like Daredevil, The Witcher and The Punisher. The show's production was delayed but is now underway at Cape Town Film Studios.


The President of South Africa even mentioned the show in a press release, commenting, “One Piece is Netflix’s biggest production project in Africa to date – both in terms of scale and budget, covering South African labor, infrastructure and suppliers.”


The first episode of the series, which is titled "Romance Dawn," is scripted by Steven Maeda and Matt Owens. Filming for the series concluded on August 22, 2022.

Netflix has also revealed the actors, who will be playing the well-loved characters in the series. Iñaki Godoy will portray Luffy, Mackenyu will play Zoro, Emily Rudd will take on the role of Nami, Jacob Gibson will play Usopp and Taz Skylar will portray Sanji.
