Kevin Mitnick’s hacking journey
It all began in 1979 when he was merely 12-years-old, though it wasn't until 1988 that he faced legal consequences with a 12-month prison sentence for software copying. His hacking escapades continued even after his conviction, breaking into various systems, including Pacific Bell's voicemail computers, during the '90s as a fugitive.
While involved in the theft of files and credit card numbers, he claimed to have never taken money from his victims. In 1995, he was caught and charged with telephone access device misuse and computer fraud.
Authorities suspected he had access to valuable corporate trade secrets. Imprisoned for five years, Mitnick viewed it as a "vacation" before transforming his path to become a White Hat hacker and cybersecurity consultant. Co-owning KnowBe4, a company providing security awareness training, and phishing simulations, marked another phase in his life. His early hacking feats date back to age 12 when he outsmarted LA's public transportation system.
