The Romanian athlete had already picked up her nation's flag and begun celebrating when the scoreboard clearly suggested that Barbosu had won a bronze, coming in the third position. However, a sudden score change saw her dropping from her third position, and Jordan Chiles climbed to the bronze medal-winning position instead.

According to Olympic officials, this happened on the basis of Chiles' review around the points, and right after, judges reviewed their decision and revised the points tally. However, Barbosu had to bear the brunt of this score change and missed out on the first Olympic medal of her career

Retired Romanian athlete, Nadia Comaneci, who was one of the leading gymnasts of her time, was angered by this post-score declaration review in these final moments and claimed that it severely affects the mental health and emotions of the athletes, in cases like this, where a deserving athlete is deprived of a medal, even after showing the due expectations. This, according to Comaneci, won five gold medals during her Olympics career, was something that should not have been done in the first place and that athletes' mental health should be protected at all costs.
