Ukrainian professional boxer Vasiliy Lomachenko won unanimously against Jamaine Ortiz in a very tough fight at MSG. Lomachenko's win (17-2, 11 KO) could lead to a match against Devin Haney next year. A major underdog, Ortiz (16-1-1, 8 KO), controlled the match because of his athleticism, jab, and superior size. However, Lomachenko won the tight contest. The scores were 115-113, 116-112, and 117-111.
Lomachenko is an Olympic gold medallist and a three-time division champion. He fought his first fight in 10 months, and the 34-year-old agreed to travel to Australia in June for a fight against George Kambasos. However, he decided to stay in Ukraine to stay with his family in a war situation.
Haney stepped in to strike a deal for two fights against Kambasos in place of Lomachenko in Melbourne. He won all four lightweight titles. Haney sat ringside to see Lomachenko return, seeing him struggle in the first six. Haney said he believes the performance wasn't his best after he entered the ring after the match and hoped they could get a good match. Lomachenko said he would be ready after he had a swollen face.
