Ohio's new gun law is set to become operational on Monday

Ohio is all set to implement a new gun law from Monday. The new law would allow people to carry concealed weapons. According to the law, all residents of Ohio who are 21 years or older can carry concealed weapons.

The law is attracting controversy as a legally eligible person can carry a gun without a permit, training or background check.

In March 2022, the Governor of Ohio, Mike Dewine, signed 'constitutional carry'. This law made the concealed carry permit optional for individuals legally able to own a gun. This decision, however, does not carry unanimous agreement.


A self-defence instructor of firearms, Rufus Johnson, said that training is required to carry a gun. When you take the training out of the equation, it would be like going back to the times of Wild Wild West.

However, the President of the Fraternal Order of Police, Daniel Hils, had a contrarian view. He said that the law validates a right bestowed by God. The Government does not give this right. He asked why the Government worries about restricting law-abiding citizens v/s citizens who do not abide by the law.

Rufus Johnson, however, argued that even law-abiding citizens needed training to which he has devoted more than ten years of his life. He stressed that safety with guns is essential even when the Government allows carrying weapons without training. According to Rufus, more gun accidents would occur without training, and it would also take away the right to safety of other individuals.

According to Johnson, for an average person picking up a weapon, the first thing that comes to mind is putting their finger on the trigger if they are not otherwise trained.

Though Ohio is implementing this law now, more than 20 US states already have similar gun laws. Ohio would be the 23rd State to join the 'constitutional carry' list.
