October mayhem? These three major issues could well drag down Kamala Harris' chances in U.S elections

Kamala Harris has three key problems that could jeopardize her electoral chances: Iranian missile assaults on Israel, the effects of Hurricane Helene, and a massive dockworker strike.

On Tuesday, the White House north lawn bore the enormous numeral ‘100.’ Jimmy Carter, the former US president, was honored on his birthday. Carter only held office for one term due to a number of outside factors, including high inflation and the hostage situation in Iran.

Joe Biden, the man occupying the White House right now, must be familiar with the feeling of juggling three fires at once. At least 180 missiles have been fired by Iran into Israel; six US states are still recovering from Hurricane Helene; and over 45,000 dockworkers went on strike, closing ports from Maine to Texas.

Biden is not seeking re-election next month, but the fate of his vice-president and would-be successor, Kamala Harris, remains uncertain. Donald Trump, a rival, sees an opportunity to label her with chaos. Biden has faced numerous catastrophes, including the botched Afghanistan withdrawal of 2021, the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the Hamas attack on Israel in 2023.

The world is in disarray under Biden, in contrast to years of peace under Trump. The vice president has spent her candidacy pursuing a Goldilocks principle: not too hot on Biden, not too cold on Biden, but displaying just-right loyalty.

Current events are testing where Harris the vice-president ends and Harris the candidate begins. Activists on the left are eager for any hint that she will give Palestinians a more sympathetic ear and take a harder line on Netanyahu.

Harris is also racing to put their stamp on Hurricane Helene, which crashed ashore in Florida last Thursday and killed at least 150 people. The hurricane killed at least 150 people and damaged homes and businesses, testing Harris’s response to natural disasters during her campaign.

Both candidates are vying for trade union support. Trump has previously praised Elon Musk for firing workers who go on strike, saying that the situation should have never come to this and that Americans who thrived under President Trump can't even get by because of Kamala Harris.

A strike involving over 45,000 dockworkers has triggered port closures throughout the United States, affecting supply chains and perhaps resulting in shortages and higher costs. This labor problem might have a huge impact on Harris' electoral prospects, with Trump criticizing her for the strike's economic implications.
