Oblivion Remastered Patch 1.2 rolls out on Steam Beta with performance upgrades, new difficulty settings, and major bug fixes; Update 1.3 already in development, says Bethesda

Bethesda has released Update 1.2 for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, rolling out first to Steam’s beta branch. The patch includes critical performance improvements, bug fixes, and expanded gameplay options, as the developer continues to respond to widespread user feedback following the game’s March launch.

Available now for PC players through Steam Beta, the update addresses several technical issues that have affected game stability across all platforms. Bethesda confirmed the update will be released on consoles and the Microsoft Store in the coming days.

“In Update 1.2, we focused on fixes related to quests, gameplay, and performance,” the studio said in its official patch notes. “We’ve also added several damage scaling adjustments to let you better tailor your game experience.”

The update introduces a new "Journeyman" difficulty setting, bridging the gap between the existing "Adept" and "Expert" levels. Players can now customize both Player Combat Damage and Enemy Combat Damage, allowing for more control over the game’s challenge level.

Patch 1.2 also delivers significant performance upgrades, fixing frame rate drops in areas such as Deepscorn Hollow, Skingrad, and Bravil Castle. Open-world stuttering has been reduced, and several GPU-related crashes have been addressed. The patch also improves water rendering, weather effects, and character animations.

On the user interface, the update fixes disappearing map markers, corrects issues with UI scaling at lower resolutions, and resolves keybinding problems on non-QWERTY keyboards. Controller users will also see improvements in spell creation and enchanting menus.

Several quest-related bugs have been resolved, including missing NPC animations, crashes during certain missions, and visual glitches tied to specific locations and cutscenes.

Oblivion Remastered, which uses Unreal Engine 5, has been one of the year’s top-selling games but received criticism for performance instability, especially on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Tech analysts like Digital Foundry described the console experience as “dire,” citing frame rate drops and memory leaks.

Bethesda has confirmed that a future Update 1.3 is in development, with continued emphasis on platform stability and performance. In the meantime, players can access the 1.2 patch by opting into the Steam beta version via the game’s properties menu.
