NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey Resigns Amid Serious Sexual Misconduct Allegations

The NYPD's Chief of Department, Jeffrey Maddrey, has resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

The New York Police Department's top uniformed officer, Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, has resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct. His resignation was accepted by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Friday night, effective immediately.

The resignation comes after accusations that Maddrey, who has been with the NYPD since 1991, allegedly demanded sex and other favors from a subordinate. The officer, who works in Maddrey's office, spoke to The New York Post, detailing how Maddrey's behavior began after his promotion to chief of department. She claims the misconduct was a routine occurrence since his rise to power. Her lawyer intends to file a claim against the city, seeking formal recognition of these allegations.

Maddrey's attorney, Lambros Lambrou, has dismissed the accusations, calling them "completely meritless."

While the department declined further comment on the allegations, a statement emphasized that the NYPD takes all allegations of sexual misconduct seriously and would investigate the matter thoroughly. Chief of Patrol John Chell will now serve as the interim chief of department, with Philip Rivera stepping in as the head of the patrol division.

Maddrey’s career with the NYPD has spanned over three decades, with notable positions including Chief of Housing and Chief of Patrol before his promotion to Chief of Department in December 2023. Earlier this year, an administrative judge recommended that disciplinary charges against Maddrey related to another incident be dropped, citing jurisdictional issues with the Civilian Complaint Review Board.
