Alex Murdaugh, a former South Carolina lawyer convicted of killing his wife and son, has slammed the new drama series Murdaugh: Death in the Family on Disney’s Hulu. The story of the series revolves around Murdaugh’s rise and fall as a Lowcountry legal tycoon and it portrays the moments leading up to and immediately after the shotgun killings of Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, and teenage son, Paul.

According to AP, the two were shot several times and their bodies were found near a dog kennel, Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said. The entire eight-part Hulu limited series heads toward its November 19 finale on Hulu. Ahead of the finale, the lawyer at the center of the true crime story has called out the show for “sensationalized” portrayal of the brutal double murder.

Murdaugh‘s legal team slams series makers

Murdaugh‘s legal team has said that the convicted murderer “is deeply disappointed and disturbed” by the depiction from creators Michael D. Fuller and Erin Lee Carr. According to reports, his legal team has accused the makers of “numerous inaccuracies” in the series. “The program contains numerous inaccuracies and misleading portrayals that distort the truth of their lives,” said Murdaugh’s defense team in a statement shared with the New York Post.

“The depiction of their personal family dynamics is particularly troubling, as it totally mischaracterizes Alex’s relationships with his wife, Maggie, and his son, Paul, both of whom Alex loves so dearly.” According to the disgraced attorney, the producers of the show did not consult his legal team or family members to corroborate their versions of events as the series was under development.

“Equally concerning is the lack of engagement by the producers or actors to understand the individuals portrayed,” the statement further stated.

“No one from Hulu ever reached out to Alex, his son Buster, anyone in the Murdaugh family or Alex’s attorneys to hear their perspective or verify the facts. Instead, the program appears to rely heavily on sensationalized accounts from secondary sources with no direct knowledge or relationship with him or his family. Hulu did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Murdaugh: Death in the Family drama series

Hulu has dramatized the case in a new limited series, now streaming, called “Murdaugh: Death in the Family.” Jason Clarke stars as Murdaugh alongside Patricia Arquette as his wife, Maggie, and Johnny Berchtold and Will Harrison play sons Paul and Buster.

The series is based on the reporting of local journalist Mandy Matney, who covered the case extensively in a podcast and is an executive producer. Brittany Snow plays Matney in the series.

Ahead of Murdaugh’s indictment, prosecutors amassed a plethora of charges alleging the disgraced attorney had stolen millions of dollars from clients and victims’ families to maintain his painkiller addiction, according to reports. “I think it’s oftentimes hard for people to compartmentalize what we think and the person we think we knew,” Mark Tinsley, an attorney who testified in the criminal case against Murdaugh, told Fox News Digital.

“I think there’s probably a group of people that still find it hard to believe that the facade that they saw wasn’t real.” In March 2023, a South Carolina jury found Murdaugh guilty of double murder. He was handed two consecutive life sentences.
