November’s Supermoon: When and How to watch the closest and brightest of 2025 - Is it visible with the naked eye?
Skywatchers can anticipate a spectacular celestial event on Wednesday, November 5 as the supermoon will be the closest and brightest of 2025. It will appear larger and brighter in the night sky. This phenomenon occurs when the full moon is at its ...

The moon’s orbit around Earth is slightly elliptical, meaning its distance from us changes as it travels. A 'supermoon' occurs when the full moon coincides with the point in its orbit closest to Earth, known as perigee. According to NASA, this makes the moon appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the dimmest full moon of the year as reported by AP.
According to AP, November’s supermoon is the second of three this year and also the closest, coming to within just under 222,000 miles (357,000 kilometers) of Earth - making it the nearest and brightest full moon of 2025.
Supermoons occur three times in a year. One in October made the moon appear slightly larger, while another in December will mark the final supermoon of the year.
The supermoon will be clearly visible without the need for telescopes or special equipment. For the best view, find an open spot with minimal light pollution. Although the difference in the moon’s size is subtle to the naked eye, clear skies will make its brilliance stand out.
Tides can be slightly higher during a supermoon since the moon is closer to Earth, explained astronomer Lawrence Wasserman of Lowell Observatory, reported AP. However, he noted that the difference is usually minimal and not easily noticeable.
