The Serbian star has often engaged in playful moments on court, and this celebration highlighted both his joy and confidence. Djokovic extended his perfect record against fourth seed Fritz with a 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win Tuesday night, booking a blockbuster US Open semi-final clash with Carlos Alcaraz.
The 38-year-old, who had defeated Fritz in all 10 of their prior encounters, was pushed throughout the contest but ultimately proved too strong for last year’s runner-up. The victory keeps Djokovic’s pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam crown alive as he continues to showcase his trademark resilience.
Djokovic pushed his dominance further, improving to 11-0 against Fritz while advancing to a record-extending 53rd Grand Slam semifinal, including a record-tying 14th at the US Open. Fritz’s defeat also prolongs the drought for American men in majors, with no player from the US having lifted a Grand Slam singles trophy since Andy Roddick’s triumph in New York back in 2003.
Djokovic holds a 5-3 edge in his head-to-head battles with No. 2 seed Alcaraz, having won their last two encounters - the Australian Open quarterfinals earlier this year and the Paris Olympics final, where the Serbian achieved his long-cherished dream of capturing Olympic gold for his country.
