Novak Djokovic has been permitted to play in the Australian Open 2023 as the Australian government has overturned the visa ban imposed on the Serbian tennis star.

Djokovic was detained, his visa was cancelled, and he was banned from visiting Australia for three years in January after he refused to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

He was deported from Australia 10 days after being detained.

Notably, the country was dubbed "Fortress Australia" at that time for putting some strictest pandemic restrictions in place to tackle the pandemic.

However, after getting detained, Djokovic challenged the court decision, which ruled in favour of the tennis star and overturned the government's decision.

But the then-Immigration Minister Alex Hawke, using his special discretionary powers, cancelled his visa again "in the public interest." Hawke had said that Djokovic's presence in the tournament could cause "civil unrest." While many Australians supported the government in cancelling Djokovic's visa, some fans created an uproar against it.

The new Australian government, which came into power in May, has now decided to overturn the ban and grant a visa to tennis star Djokovic.

Tennis Australia head Craig Tiley, on November 15, asserted that Djokovic was most likely to play in the next year's Australian Open.
