‘Not Okay’ movie review: Terrible social media satire fails to steal the show. Find out why
‘Not Okay’ movie fails to impress and can be termed a terrible social media satire. The writer-director Quinn Shephard's portrayal is not quite biting and effective.

Quinn Shephard is the writer-director of the film. Her portrayal does not seem to be as biting and effective as it could've been. It is evident from the first scene that Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch) would go to any length to be noticed and accepted, such as being happy to be invited to events for queers even though she did not identify as one.
Danni tries very hard to make people like her, which is quite evident from her persona. Along the same lines, "Not Okay" also seemed to be trying too hard, whether it was an attempt to shock the audience through a dark comedy or present the reality of social media chasers

Danni's coworkers ask behind her back whether tone-deaf could be a brand. It is also what the film felt like. Danni plays the role of a photo editor at Depravity and wants to be a writer and influencer. Her boss somehow did not approve her article, "Why Am I So Sad?"
Danny takes her shenanigans even further when Paris faces a terrorist attack. She starts acting like a survivor. Danny meets Mia Isaac (Rowan) at a survivor support group. Rowan fights for a change since she survived a school shootout. Danni sees her rise on social media, and her friendship with Mia starts as a sympathy friendship. However, it becomes something more important to her later on.
The issue with "Not Okay" is that Danni is not likable, interesting or funny in any way, even though the actor did a good job trying to portray a bland character.
Other films like Ingrid Goes West, Catfish and Eighth Grade portray the dangers of the world of social media in a better way.
