Microsoft Withdraws From $1 Billion Ohio Data Center Project
The tech giant's announcement to "push back plans" for the data centres comes only months after Microsoft had committed to invest $1 billion in the state, an action that was poised to generate thousands of jobs and boost the local economy, according to Columbus Dispatch.Rising Costs and Tariffs
Microsoft's pullout from the Ohio project is part of a larger trend in the technology sector due to high AI budgets and now even Trump's tariffs will add to the company's financial problems. The US president Donald Trump announced steep duties on top technology equipment suppliers including 34% on China, 32% on Taiwan and 25% on South Korea while imposing a 10% base tariff on all imports to the United States, reported Daily Mail.
After Trump's announcement, D.A. Davidson analyst, Gil Luria claimed that, "There's no doubt that the equipment that goes into data centers will become significantly more expensive," as quoted by Daily Mail.
A partner at research firm Everest Group, Abhishek Singh said, "Capital expenditure by tech giants will get reshuffled: Expect major players in AI infrastructure and consumer tech to reallocate short-term spending away from expansion and toward procurement hedging or sourcing shifts," quoted Reuters.
Project's Impact on Local Economy
According to Daily Mail, Microsoft's now-scrapped plan was to invest $700 million in building costs and $300 million in machinery expenses, and construction was scheduled to start in July. The project was supposed to create 400 construction jobs and hundreds of full-time jobs, reported Daily Mail.An analyst on social media platform X, whose username is @AdameMedia, wrote in a post that, "Licking County, Ohio will lose roughly 1,000 jobs & $150 million per year in revenue for the local economy," as per the X post.
