Officials report that five persons have been shot and killed in Raleigh, North Carolina, including an off-duty police officer.

According to the city’s mayor, the shooting took place close to the Neuse River Greenway, which is a popular trail on the outer side of the state capital.

A motive is yet to be established, but Raleigh Police Lieutenant Jason Borneo said it would probably "come to bear" in the coming days.


"Tonight, terror has reached our doorstep. The nightmare of every community has come to Raleigh," North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference, as reported by BBC News.

Later, according to Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin, the shooter was contained in a residence in the neighbourhood by police.

After which, Raleigh police tweeted that the culprit had been apprehended.



According to Borneo, the shooter is a "white male juvenile".

The mayor reported that at least two additional persons, including a second police officer, were hurt and sent to the hospital. According to Lieutenant Borneo, one victim is still in the hospital and is in critical condition.

According to the Gun Violence Archive website, more than 34,000 people were killed by gunshots in the US in 2022, with more than half of those deaths coming from suicide.

Governor Cooper said that they would have a "lot of work to do and, tonight, have a lot to be sad about."
