A North Carolina mother is suing Roblox after alleging that the platform enabled a predator to exploit her 10-year-old daughter, raising questions about child safety and online moderation
According to the complaint, the predator posed as a child, gained the victim's trust, and eventually coerced her into sending explicit images in exchange for Robux, Roblox's virtual currency.
After building trust by posing as a child, the predator escalated his grooming tactics and successfully transitioned their conversations from Roblox to text messaging, where the exploitation occurred.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and a jury trial, with the plaintiff’s attorneys framing the case as more than a matter of individual harm, asserting it challenges Roblox’s alleged systemic failures to protect children.
The lawsuit alleges that Roblox's lack of effective age verification and moderation allowed the predator to exploit the platform's features. Critics argue that Roblox's design and policies make it vulnerable to misuse by predators.
In response to these concerns, Roblox has stated that safety is a top priority and that they are continuously working to improve their moderation tools and policies. However, the effectiveness of these measures has been questioned by experts and advocacy groups.
A spokesperson for Roblox stated to The Post, which read: “We are deeply troubled by any incident that endangers our users, and safety is a top priority.”
The outcome of this lawsuit could have significant implications for online platforms and their responsibility to protect young users from exploitation, as many children become “obsessed” with obtaining the virtual currency, often telling strangers they’ll do “Anything for Robux,” the lawsuit states.
The lawsuit claims that Roblox’s sign-up process is insufficiently secure, requiring only a birthdate, username, and password, with no effective age verification to prevent children from creating accounts with falsified ages.
Adults could directly message children of any age on the platform, and current safety measures remain inadequate because the company continues to rely on self-reported birthdates for age verification, leaving young users vulnerable to exploitation.
Launched in 2006, Roblox has become immensely popular among children, particularly during the pandemic, reaching around 30 million daily users by September 2020, with over half under age 13.
According to the New York Post website, its 2023 annual report stated that the platform now averages 68.5 million daily active users, including 21 percent under 9, 21 percent aged 9-12, and 16 percent aged 13-16.
Despite promoting itself as the “#1 gaming site for kids and teens,” the lawsuit alleges that Roblox prioritizes user growth over ensuring child safety.
