Austin police have identified the suspect in Monday’s, August 11, North Austin Target shooting that left three people dead as a 32-year-old white male with a history of mental health issues. The suspect “does have a rap sheet with us,” according to the Austin Police Department (APD), though details of his prior offenses have not been released. His name remains withheld pending further investigation.

The shooting occurred at the Target store located at 8601 Research Boulevard, between Ohlen Road and Fairfield Drive. APD said the suspect fled the store in a stolen vehicle, which he later crashed, before carjacking another vehicle and driving to South Austin. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Austin-Travis County EMS initially reported four patients at the scene. Police later confirmed that three victims had been shot and died from their injuries, while a fourth individual was treated for an unrelated matter.

Investigation and public appeal for information

The motive for the North Austin Target shooting remains undetermined. Investigators have not confirmed whether the suspect had any connection to the victims. The victims’ identities are being withheld until families are notified.

The Target store is located in a busy commercial area surrounded by other retail outlets and restaurants. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing shoppers running from the store as officers arrived.
