Nord Stream pipeline leakages: Who may be behind it? Read to know

The Nord Stream pipeline leakages have become a huge cause of concern for Europe. As the matter is linked to the West and Russia, it may get escalated for the worse.

Agencies
The Swedish coast guard reported the discovery of the fourth leak in the two damaged pipes that constitute the Nord Stream pipelines on September 29. The pipelines transport gas from Russia to Europe.

The leak is the second to be detected in Swedish seas, after the discovery of two breaches near Denmark earlier. The Danish military shared a video on Tuesday displaying gas bubbles about a kilometer in diameter at the surface of the North Sea near the island of Bornholm.

When did the leak occur?

Nord Stream's operators reported a large pressure reduction in both pipelines on Monday, which was subsequently determined to be caused by three distinct gas leaks from the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipes near the Danish island of Bornholm.

Was it a sabotage attempt?

While investigations have yet to determine the cause of the leaks, European and American authorities fear foul play. They claimed that three distinct leaks and explosions occurred on the same day as an act of sabotage.

Russia said it did not rule out sabotage as a reason behind the damage, adding it was an issue affecting the energy security of the "entire continent," while Poland backed up the stance and Denmark said it can’t be discounted.

Who benefits from it?

The EU is highly dependent on the uninterrupted gas supply from Russia through these pipes for various kinds of purposes. Russia has been accused of causing the leak by Ukraine and some other countries.
It is also the suspect in the eyes of the West. Russia is also under scrutiny as the leaks happened just one day before the start of the Baltic Pipe, which would reduce Poland's reliance on Russian gas.
