No. 4 Miami outlasts Florida 26-7 as Hurricanes’ defense dominates, Gators plunge to worst start since 1986
Miami Hurricanes triumphed over Florida Gators with a 26-7 victory, propelling their season record to 4-0. A dominant first half and a late touchdown drive sealed the win, overshadowing Florida's brief second-half resurgence. Running backs Fletche...

The Hurricanes controlled the first half, limiting Florida to just 32 total yards and building a 13-0 lead at halftime. Miami’s offense was slowed slightly by six procedural penalties in the first half, keeping their point total modest despite consistent drives.
Florida rallied in the second half, engineering an 80-yard touchdown drive that consumed much of the third quarter. A failed fourth-down conversion deep in Miami territory, however, prevented the Gators from taking the lead. Miami’s final touchdown drive, a deliberate seven-minute effort late in the fourth quarter, sealed the win with 4:08 remaining.
Miami running backs Mark Fletcher and CharMar Brown were key contributors, combining for 190 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, with Brown adding 53 receiving yards. Florida’s offense struggled throughout, totaling only 139 yards while quarterback DJ Lagway averaged just 2.8 yards per pass attempt and the team went 0-for-13 on third downs.
The loss intensifies scrutiny on Florida coach Billy Napier, as the Gators have now suffered two nonconference defeats in the early season. Napier’s squad will head into a bye week with a 1-3 record, marking their worst start through four games since 1986.
For Miami, the victory extends an impressive home record, improving to 78-3 as an AP Top 5 team. The Hurricanes are in the midst of an 11-game home winning streak, the longest since a 13-game stretch in 2018. Quarterback Carson Beck improved to 3-0 in his career against Florida, including two previous wins over Georgia.
Defensive standout Rueben Bain continued to make his presence felt, influencing nearly every play despite being credited with only one tackle for loss, one quarterback hurry, and half a sack. His activity and movement were pivotal in Miami’s pass rush and run defense.
While Miami’s defense dominated, quarterback Carson Beck showed signs of inconsistency, completing 17 of 30 passes for 160 yards with a second-half interception. His performance raises questions as the Hurricanes prepare for a critical matchup against Florida State.
Miami’s victory highlighted their balanced attack, with the running backs stepping up and the defense consistently disrupting Florida’s offense. Meanwhile, Florida’s fleeting second-half revival could not overcome their early struggles, leaving the program facing questions about its trajectory under Napier.
