It's been more than eight years since the launch of Nintendo Switch, one of the highest selling gaming systems from the Japanese multinational company. Gamers and Nintendo fans are now eagerly waiting for Nintendo Switch 2, which comes out on June 5.

According to Variety, the much-awaited gaming console might face an "uphill battle with consumers," amid the recently announced tariffs by US President Donald Trump and the skepticism over its pricing in the international market.

Can Nintendo Switch 2 match up the expectations?

Although the Switch 2 has gained significant hype in recent months, it might not be making its debut at a "more uncertain and strenuous time," the report states.


Earlier, official data showed that Nintendo sold more than 150 million units of its original Switch ever since its launch, while PlayStation 5 sold close to 75 million units and Xbox Series X/S was at 32.5 million.

However, PlayStation 5 sold more units -- 20.2 million -- than Nintendo Switch (11.5 million) last year. The Xbox Series X/S stood at 5 million.

Nintendo had more than doubled the hardware sales of Xbox in 2024. But the year-over-year hardware sales of the console highlight a steady decline, with his holiday sales peaking in 2020 after the launch year.

In 2024, the holiday-quarter software sales remained 37 per cent less than those in 2021.

Third-party games on Nintendo Switch 2

Recently, Nintendo provided a chance to experience Switch 2, where a demo was held for several third-party games, which includes titles like Hogwarts Legacy and Cyberpunk 2077.

As per Variety, the frame rates for these games were capped at nearly 30 frames per second. Usually, it hits the standard mark of 60 frames-per-second on other handheld devices for such games.

A major highlight of Switch 2 is the Mario Kart World, which will remain exclusively available on the console. It features a Knockout Tour, a 24-player battle-royale mode, that showcases Switch 2's ability to handle so many players at a particular time.

However, the game will be made available for $80, with its pricing sparking outrage among gamers. For AAA titles, the $70 price point became a new-game standard in 2020. This was the time when PS5 and Xbox made their debut.

Earlier this month, Omdia predicted that Nintendo will be able to sell around 15 million units of Switch 2 worldwide this year. This might put the upcoming console ahead of the original Switch by nearly 10 per cent compared to its sales in the first calendar year.

The research and advisory group forecasts that the Switch 2 sales might fall below its predecessor as soon as four years into the run.
