Nintendo expands Mii options with non-binary choice in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream

Nintendo has officially revealed that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will showcase the franchise’s first non-binary Mii option. During the January 29, 2026 Nintendo Direct, the feature was introduced on the game’s character creation screen, along with confirmation that same-sex romance options will also be available.

When Miis debuted on the Nintendo Wii in 2006, the avatar system only enabled two gender choices. That changes with Living the Dream on the Switch and Switch 2. During the presentation, Nintendo featured a college student Mii named “Angie” and cited,

This allows for heterosexual, same-sex, and diverse romantic pairings. These changes follow backlash from the 2014 3DS version of Tomodachi Life, where same-sex relationships were unavailable. Nintendo of America later apologized, mentioning the company could not patch the original game, but promised inclusivity in future installments.
