Nine Republicans are stepping forward to contend for the position of Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, marking the third attempt to unite around a leader for this critical role. The speaker's position has remained vacant since October 3.

Here are the current candidates seeking to fill this important role:

  1. Tom Emmer - The House's No. 3 Republican and chief vote counter, Emmer, has secured the endorsement of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He is determined to bring unity to the Republican conference and get back to work.
  2. Byron Donalds - A member of the hardline House Freedom Caucus, Donalds, a Republican from Florida, announced his candidacy in a statement late on Friday. He received support from two members during recent votes on Jordan's speaker bid.
  3. Austin Scott - Scott, a Georgia lawmaker, launched his candidacy after challenging Jordan for the nomination last week. Although he failed to secure the nomination, his bid demonstrates his commitment to the role.
  4. Kevin Hern - Chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, Hern, hailing from Oklahoma, entered the race for Speaker after Jordan withdrew. He previously garnered seven votes during the January speaker election.
  5. Mike Johnson - A conservative constitutional law attorney from Louisiana, Johnson, who has been a member since 2017, is running as a consensus candidate, emphasizing his role as a "team player and a bridge-builder."
  6. Gary Palmer - Palmer, an ardent defender of former President Donald Trump, was elected to Congress in 2014. As the chair of the House Republican Policy Committee, he aims to unite congressional Republicans.
  7. Pete Sessions - A Texas congressman since 1997 and a former chairman of the powerful House Rules Committee, Sessions declared his candidacy, highlighting his experience and ability to unite the party.
  8. Jack Bergman - Bergman, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant general, entered the race, representing Michigan in Congress since 2017.
  9. Dan Meuser - Meuser, from Pennsylvania and a four-year House member, emphasized the importance of prioritizing each member and addressing the unique needs of their districts in his bid announcement.
These candidates are set to compete for the role of Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, with each bringing their own qualifications and vision for leading the chamber. The outcome of this election will significantly impact the direction and agenda of the House of Representatives. We'll be following this development closely as the candidates vie for this influential position in the U.S. government.
