Nicolas Maduro held in Brooklyn MDC Jail: Dangerous conditions and high-profile inmates
Nicolas Maduro, the president of Venezuela, and his wife, Cilia Flores, were caught by the U.S. military on Saturday night. They were taken to the U.S. because they are accused of crimes like drug trafficking and having illegal weapons.

They are now in a jail called the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York. This jail is known for holding famous and dangerous people. Many well-known people have been in MDC before. These include drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli, singer R. Kelly, crypto fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried, and Ghislaine Maxwell.

Other world leaders have been there too. For example, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was put in MDC in 2022 for drug and gun crimes. He was later pardoned by Donald Trump in December 2025.

Dangerous conditions at MDC

The jail has many problems. It is too crowded, there is violence, medical care is bad, and some inmates have died. Because of this, some judges do not want to send people there. Before Sean “Diddy” Combs went to MDC, his lawyers said the jail was not safe. They mentioned overcrowding, not enough staff, bad food, dangerous conditions, and fights.

In 2024, at least two judges refused to send people to MDC. One was a 75-year-old charged with tax fraud. They said the jail treated people badly. Judge Jesse Furman said in January 2024 that judges often give shorter sentences because MDC is so harsh. There were lockdowns after attacks on staff.

In summer 2024, two inmates were killed in stabbings. Nine other people were later charged. In the past three years, at least four inmates committed suicide, according to NPR. The Bureau of Prisons tried to fix problems. They added more medical staff and handled over 700 repair requests. But problems still happened, like lockdowns, bad medical care, and poor food.

Reforms and safety updates

In July 2025, New York state Senator Andrew Gounardes called MDC “notorious for dangerous and inhumane conditions” causing multiple inmate deaths. The BOP reported in September 2025 that violence had decreased, contraband attempts were reduced, and staff numbers increased, claiming the jail was now safe for inmates and staff. MDC opened in the early 1990s in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood to house pre-trial detainees, currently holding about 1,300 men and women.

A 2016 report by the National Association of Women Judges said that conditions at MDC were “unconscionable.” The jail does not give enough sunlight, fresh air, or outdoor time, which breaks U.S. and UN rules, according to NPR.

In January 2019, an electrical fire caused a power outage for a whole week during very cold weather. Inmates had no heat or light. Later, the Justice Department found that the jail did not handle important problems well, like medical care and communication. In 2023, the federal government paid about $10 million to 1,600 inmates after a class-action lawsuit.

MDC also held the first federal inmate in New York City to test positive for COVID-19 in March 2020. MDC became New York City’s only federal jail after the closure of Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in August 2021, due to security and infrastructure issues highlighted after Jeffrey Epstein’s death. The MCC population was moved to other jails, and its future remains uncertain as the BOP has not secured enough funds for repairs.
