Niagara falls covered in ice as snow blizzard grips western New York

The Bomb Cyclone has wreaked havoc across, especially in western New York. During the Christmas weekend Western New York was completely paralyzed by heavy snowfall. The authorities have called the heavy snowfall the 'blizzard of the century' as the extremely bad weather has gripped the US for several days now. Due to the snow blizzard, many houses and businesses had to face widespread power outages, travel delays, and several deaths.



Several videos and pictures have emerged online of brutal weather, especially in Buffalo, where bodies were found in cars and behind snow banks. Now a recent video of the famous Niagara falls that can be seen covered in ice has emerged online and has been doing rounds on the internet.


The area has recently seen a wave of sub-zero temperatures, which has caused the falls to change into a partially frozen winter paradise. Although several of the falls were partially frozen, the New York Post said that the sheer amount of water that gushes over and the continual flow of the roaring liquid ensure that the falls virtually never entirely freeze.



As per the Niagara Parks website, when it is extremely cold, the mist and spray start to form an ice crust on top of the rushing water, giving the impression that the Falls have stopped. Under the sheets of ice, though, the water still flows. According to the Niagara Falls New York State Park, 3160 tonnes of water are said to fall over Niagara Falls per second.

Before 1964, the flow of water was obstructed by ice and the water flow may be further upstream, causing the volume of water on the US side of the Falls to freeze. This used to happen before the steel ice booms were installed which had the aim to prevent large ice accumulations.
