NHL: Hershey Bears beat Coachella Valley Firebirds to win Calder Cup

Hershey Bears lifted the Calder Cup for a record 12th time Wednesday when they crushed Coachella Valley Firebirds 3-2.

It was Michael Vecchione who used the overtime brilliantly and scored off a rebound in Game 7 of the American Hockey League title final. It was Evans who opened the scoring at 4.41 of the first period. McCormick put the puck inside the net only 20 seconds afterward and made it 2-0. Evans assisted him to score the 14th goal in the playoffs.

Washington Capitals' affiliate came back to hit hard and overcome the 2-0 deficit when Hendrix Lapierre and Connor McMichael scored a goal each in the second half of the final game.


Coachella Valley got the earlier lead Captain Max McCormick and defenseman Ryker Evans scored a goal each. Joey Daccord made 35 saves for the Firebirds while Hunter Shepard made 45 saves for the Hershey Bears.

This was the second Calder Cup for Hershey coach Todd Nelson. He has earlier guided Grand Rapids to the cup in 2017. So, besides, Bun Cook and John Paddock, Todd Nelson became the only coach to win Calder Cups with two teams.

The Calder Cup is the ice hockey trophy that is given to American Hockey League’s playoff champions. It was launched in 1937 and Syracuse Stars were the first to win this trophy. Hershey Bears have won the cup a maximum of 12 times. While the Cleveland Barons have lifted this cup nine times, Springfield Indians won it seven times.
