Dan Marino, the legendary Miami Dolphins quarterback, has revealed openly about his battle with a liver condition, expressing how lifestyle modifications have helped him to get back the control over his health. Marino, who celebrated his 64th birthday on September 15, was diagnosed in 2007 with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), previously known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The condition is due to fat buildup in the liver and, if untreated, can result in liver cancer, cirrhosis, and liver failure. Marino cited that the diagnosis came seven years after his retirement term from the NFL, a timing which he believes to be coincident
Early Diagnosis
“When the doctors right away said that can be reversible,” Marino cited, “it can be taken care of, but, mainly for me, they were saying, like, ‘You gotta work out. You got to lose weight.’ ” During his professional period, Marino exercised “all the time,” but he acknowledged that after retirement term, “I kind of got away from that a little bit.”After following medical instructions, Marino enlisted former Dolphins running back Terry Kirby as his personal trainer and accompanied daily walks and bike rides with his wife, Claire. “It's the exercise, riding bike, walking, and diet, and then getting back to just being consistent, waking up and making sure you gotta do something every day,” he described. Marino also adopted a Mediterranean diet, limiting wine, pizza, candy, and ice cream from his habits. He also undergoes annual ultrasound evaluations to track his liver’s health.
Silent Nature of MASH
Marino remembered that his primary symptoms were subtle, explaining only “a little fatigued” in a routine checkup. MASH is often named a “silent” illness because it can grow over years without any visible signs.“The doctors right away said that can be reversible, it can be taken care of,” Marino highlighted. The focus for reversing the condition was not only medication but significant lifestyle alterations, diet, exercise, and routine healthy habits.
