New Zealand's weak economy seeing more and more people fleeing country, here's the current status of net immigration

New Zealand is not currently the top choice for living for its own citizens, according to statistics that show a weak economy is responsible for this

TIL Creatives
New Zealand's weak economy is seeing a recording number of people begin seeking overseas work opportunities and reside elsewhere than their own country, amid high costs of living and deep recession. According to a Fortune report, departures rose to 128,705 last year from 101,585 in 2023, and a major bracket of New Zealanders have left the country to seek opportunities elsewhere, show latest stats.

New Zealand economy and weak labor market pushing people away

The weaker labor market in the US is one of the biggest reasons for the sudden rise in departures of New Zealanders from the country. While this very thing eases the pressure off the housing market, slower population growth and a sharp drop in net immigration may also impede an economic recovery, says Fortune. Moreover, it could be helpful for the government's development agenda ahead of the 2026 elections.

The total number of New Zealanders who departed the country, including those who returned home, touched home stood at 47,000 recently, which is a slight rise from the 43,300 figure from 2023. According to Fortune, most of those who left the country went ahead to reside in Australia for overseas opportunities in that country.
