The Yankees have officially changed their decades-old rule, which previously required players to maintain short hair and remain clean-shaven, apart from a moustache.

This decision follows a recent photo of Devin Williams showing slight hair growth on his chin. The Yankees have nowee decided to allow “well-groomed beards” within their organisation. Williams, a relief pitcher recently acquired by the team, previously played for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Yankees’ no-facial-hair policy

The Yankees’ beard ban had been in place for 49 years, first imposed by former owner George Steinbrenner.

Under the previous policy, players were permitted to have a moustache, which is why Williams was seen sporting one during spring training. However, any facial hair below the upper lip remained strictly prohibited until February 21.

How was the decision made?

According to Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, the decision to amend the facial hair policy was the result of discussions with both former and current players and had been under consideration for several years.

Some fans also noticed that Williams had liked a post about the rule change on social media.

While the policy update was not made specifically for Williams, it certainly affected him. He was also among the players most impacted by MLB’s new pitch tempo rule.

Interestingly, some fans had already speculated about this change, as Williams had started growing his beard back for his team photo after initially trimming it down to just a moustache upon joining the Yankees.
