After unsuccessful negotiation with the news publisher, New York Times staff went on strike for 24 hours on December 8.

Thousands of New York Times employees went on strike for 24 hours on Thursday following a dispute between the newspaper's workers union and negotiators about wages and other topics.

More than 1,100 union employees at the New York Times Co will strike for one day after failing to reach an agreement with the news publisher on a "full and equitable contract," marking the newspaper's first strike in more than 40 years.

The NewsGuild declared in a tweet "Over 1100 New York Times staff are now officially on work stoppage, the first of this size at the corporation in four decades”. “It's never easy to decline to perform a job you enjoy, but our members are eager to go to any length to ensure a better newsroom for everybody."

Newsroom personnel and other members of The NewsGuild of New York have expressed frustration with the protracted negotiating that occurred after their previous contract ended in March 2021. Union declared last week that more than 1,100 employees would go on strike for 24 hours beginning at 12:01 a.m. Thursday unless the two parties reached an agreement.

According to the Associated Press, discussions took place on Tuesday and portions of Wednesday, but the parties remained far apart on matters such as salary hikes and remote-work restrictions.

This marks an unprecedented obstacle for the working of the New York Times as it marks the biggest strike in the botch-less history of the Newspaper giant.

Elon Musk also reacted on twitter after this news break and captioned it "Woke V Woke". This is not the first time Elon Musk has targeted the publication. Elon Musk chastised The New York Times last week for failing to cover the issue surrounding Twitter's censorship of a New York Post piece on Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden.
