Authorities in New York state are finding an appropriate prison to lodge Donald Trump who is the former US President and the likely Republican candidate in the upcoming US Presidential Elections, reports the 'Mirror'. A Manhattan jury will sentence Trump on July 11 in the hush money case in which Trump was convicted of 34 counts of felony. Various logistical challenges have come to the forefront, keeping in mind the security of a high-value prisoner such as the former US President.

Likely Prisons

Several facilities have been identified by the authorities where Trump could be lodged in a cell if he is sentenced to a term of imprisonment of more than a year. Generally, as per US law, if an individual is convicted for a term exceeding a year, he is sent to prison, whereas if it is less than a year, he is sent to a correctional facility.

Rikers Island Jail?

In the present circumstances, if Trump is convicted for a term of less than 1 year imprisonment, he is likely to be sent to the Rikers Island Jail in the Bronx. This prison was originally built to house individuals who were suffering from contagious diseases. The high-profile detainees are housed in the VIP West facility.

Exclusive jail for Donald Trump?

Another prison being explored is the 19th floor of the Bellevue Hospital Ward where he would be imprisoned on an exclusive floor, away from the rest of the prisoners.

Whichever place the former president may be lodged, he would require round-the-clock security provided by the US Secret Service. This will require adequate space for the president as well as security personnel. Further, he will have to be kept away from the regular prisoners keeping in mind the security interests.

Is Trump about to be imprisoned?

The legal experts who had previously dismissed a prison term on charges of falsifying business records are generally not serious enough to attract a prison term, and have now contended that the jury may find the required reasoning to accord a jail term.
