8 million New Yorkers to get up to $400 inflation refund
New York State has started mailing out its first-ever inflation refund checks as part of a $2.5 billion initiative to offer financial relief to millions of residents grappling with rising living costs. More than 8 million New Yorkers are eligible to receive these one-time payments, which range from $150 to $400 depending on income and filing status.

To qualify, residents must have filed a 2023 resident income tax return (Form IT-201), not have been claimed as a dependent, and have an adjusted gross income within specified limits.

Single filers earning $75,000 or less will receive $200, while those earning between $75,000 and $150,000 get $150. Married couples filing jointly with an income of $150,000 or less qualify for the full $400 check, and joint filers earning between $150,000 and $300,000 receive $300. Heads of households and those filing separately also qualify according to similar income thresholds.

Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled the inflation refund as targeted relief for families burdened by rising inflation-driven expenses, including higher sales taxes. The refunds acknowledge the state's strong tax revenue growth: sales tax collections ballooned by 15% post-pandemic, allowing funds to be returned directly to residents.

Mailings began in late September and will continue through November. While the rollout is automatic with no applications required, challenges remain in reaching undocumented residents and gig economy workers who often do not file traditional tax returns. There is no online tracking portal; recipients can use a dedicated helpline for inquiries.

Residents are urged to update their address with the state tax department to ensure receipt of their checks. Reissues for lost or undelivered checks are planned to begin in December.

This inflation refund initiative marks New York’s first direct cash rebate effort to mitigate inflation’s impact and is part of a broader state commitment to support middle-class families with complementary policies such as tax cuts and expanded child tax credits.
