New York Mayor Eric Adams lifts Covid jab mandate for NYC workers. What will happen to sacked employees?
Mayor Eric Adams of New York City has lifted the mandatory COVID-19 vaccine requirement for public employees, but those who were previously terminated for refusing the vaccine will not be reinstated, according to a report.

Mayor Adams announced in a statement released on Monday that the mandatory COVID-19 vaccine mandate for public employees in New York has been lifted, due to high vaccine uptake among city workers and residents. Adams stated that with over 96 per cent of city workers and more than 80 per cent of New Yorkers having received their primary COVID-19 series and with more tools available to maintain good health, it is the right time for this decision, as per a New York Post report.
He emphasized the importance of continued vaccination efforts, encouraging every New Yorker to get vaccinated and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others from COVID-19.
On the same note, City Hall confirmed that 1,780 who were fired from the job because they refused vaccination requirements will not get their jobs back – instead, they will have to re-apply.
The city will not compensate the fired workers with back pay, according to a statement from a mayoral representative. No further information was given. Some employees who were let go from agencies such as the NYPD, FDNY, Department of Education, and Department of Health, among others, filed lawsuits against the mandate when it was first introduced in 2021.
The vaccine mandates for private schools, daycare facilities, and child care staff will also no longer be in effect. The change will become effective on February 10, 2023.
