Residents of the eastern and southern part of the US have been warned to brace themselves for flash floods and thunderstorm threats in scattered areas, in the wake of the widespread heavy rainfall in the regions. In its latest bulletin, the National Weather Service predicted widespread rainfall and storms in most parts of the southern and eastern United States over the work week.

Weather updates: What to expect?

On Thursday, May 8, the weather service warned of scattered flash flooding in portions of the southern part of Texas, along with the Mid-Atlantic. According to USA Today, close to four million residents in the Northeast region remain under flood watch early in the day. These include multiple cities in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Besides these regions, flood warnings have been put in place along the rivers and full streams. This comes after several states in the US, including Texas and Oklahoma, witnessed widespread rainfall during the month of April and early May.

The National Weather Service said there are possibilities of heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, across a large swath. This covers New England and the southwest regions via the Ohio Valley and goes all the way up to the southeast region along the Gulf Coast and Texas.

Texas, in particular, has reportedly gone through several rounds of severe storms, accompanied by heavy rains in recent times.

Southeast US to face thunderstorms

Regions like Tennessee Valley, along with the Appalachians, people can expect thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds and hail over two inches in diameter in the coming time.

The weather service stated that strong winds and the ongoing instability with respect to the warming temperatures can lead to a "cluster of strong to severe storms" in eastern parts of the Tennessee Valley. The Storm Prediction Center said the cluster of "organised thunderstorms" is expected to develop over parts of southern Appalachians, Kentucky and Tennessee by the afternoon of May 8.

Later in the day, it might shift towards Alabama, Georgia and Carolinas.

Meanwhile, people in Northeastern regions, which have seen rain and flood threats in the past few days, might get to witness some relief by Mother's Day.

FAQs

1. What's the reason behind the unusual weather pattern stalling storms in eastern and southern states in the US?
According to The Washington Post, this is due to the omega block phenomenon. This takes place when a high-pressure system gets trapped between two low-pressure systems, causing the regions to face adverse weather conditions for days.

2. For how long does the flash flood threat remain in the eastern and southern part of the US?
This is expected to remain till the end of this week.
