New York gears up for celebration as the Parade of Ships returns for NYC Fleet Week 2022

After a lull of two years due to the COVID pandemic, it's time for NYC Fleet Week 2022. This time, a festival to celebrate the U.S. Army, the Fleet Week is expected to be bigger and better to make up for the last two years.

After a two-year wait due to the pandemic, Fleet Week is back in New York City.

What is NYC Fleet Week 2022?
The U.S. Army and the public celebrate Fleet Week with a disciplined and spirited welcome for Navy ships and Marines returning from deployment, plus tours, shows, sports competitions and special events at various New York City venues.

The celebration starts on 25th May 2022 and concludes on 31st May 2022. It is being held at the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum. The Museum's Memorial Day ceremony, held every year, would mark the event's conclusion.

The U.S. Navy, Marines and Coast Guard are returning to NYC for a week of family-friendly activities and demonstrations supporting the USO. You can meet Sailor, Marine and Coast Guardsmen at various events across the five boroughs from June 8-12. You'll also be able to check out antique military vehicles, aircraft on display and other displays featuring the latest technology used by today's armed forces.

A celebration running since 1984, Fleet Week is celebrated every year. However, it was held virtually over the past two years due to the pandemic-induced restrictions. The last non-virtual Fleet Week was celebrated in 2019 when about 103,000 people participated in the celebrations. This year, the previous record is expected to break.

More than 3000 seamen are expected to visit NYC for the Fleet Week event. The Parade of Ships would kickstart the Fleet Week as U.S. ships sail up the Hudson River together. All the ships would sail from Battery Park to the George Washington Bridge. The vessel would, then, dock at their respective harbours. There would also be an 11-gun salute from Fort Hamilton at the passing of the USS Bataan. Visitors can watch the spectacle from the New York Harbour between 6 am, and 9 am on 25th May 2022. On the evening of 25th May, between 8 pm and 9 pm, there will be a U.S. Marine Corps Battle Colour Detachment performance in Times Square.

Over the week, a line-up of different events has been organised, including concerts, ship tours, band performances, and military ceremonies.
