How severe is this blizzard across NYC and the tri-state?
A blizzard warning remains in effect for all five boroughs of New York City, Long Island and much of New Jersey. That designation means sustained winds of at least 35 mph, visibility reduced to a quarter mile or less due to blowing snow, and those conditions lasting for three hours or more.
How much snow is NYC getting?
Forecasters say snowfall totals are living up to expectations. Between 12 and 18 inches are projected for New York City, central Jersey and Nassau County. Parts of eastern Long Island could see as much as two feet. At times, snowfall rates have reached up to four inches per hour.
Central Park has already recorded more than 15 inches, placing this storm among its top 20 snowfalls. In Islip on Long Island, totals could end up ranking in the top five before the storm fully exits.

What closures and travel bans are in effect?
States of emergency have been declared for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as New York City.
Cellphones across the city blared push alerts Sunday night warning of a ban on non-emergency travel on all streets through noon Monday because of “dangerous blizzard conditions.” New Jersey enacted similar restrictions. Even DoorDash suspended operations within New York City, as per a report by NBC New York.
Public transportation has also been heavily impacted. The Long Island Rail Road halted train service overnight and will remain suspended until further notice. NJ Transit shut down bus, rail and light rail service Sunday night.
New York City schools were closed Monday for a traditional snow day, with a decision on Tuesday’s status to come later.
From underestimated forecasts to historic snowfall totals, this blizzard has reshaped daily life across the tri-state. As cleanup begins and restrictions slowly lift, the region is left digging out from one of its most powerful winter storms in years.
