New York City: Construction crane partially collapses after catching fire; 2 injured

New York City authorities are cautioning the public to stay away from a specific section of Manhattan on Wednesday morning. Social media users are sharing the videos and pictures of a construction crane that caught fire after partially collapsing.

The New York City Police Department posted a tweet advising people to avoid the vicinity of 10th Avenue and 11th Avenue, stretching from West 41 Street to West 42 Street, due to the crane collapse.

As per the New York City Fire Department, one civilian and one firefighter sustained injuries in the incident. The department is currently working to extinguish the fire.


The cause of the fire remains uncertain at this time. According to the FDNY, the incident occurred at 550 10th Avenue, which seems to be the location of a residential building under construction.

A video circulating on Twitter seems to capture the moment when a crane's arm, connected to a building, fractures and strikes another building across the street, causing debris to scatter down.

Subsequently, the crane arm descends rapidly to the ground, accompanied by a loud noise, as people can be observed fleeing from the area.



In April, a tragic incident occurred in the Financial District of lower Manhattan when a parking garage collapsed. The collapse resulted in the death of one worker, and five others were injured. The concrete floors of the garage fell on top of each other in a manner resembling a stack of pancakes, also crushing the parked cars.

Authorities clarified that there was no indication to suspect any foul play; it appeared to be a structural failure. Disturbing footage captured by bystanders showed vehicles dangling precariously from the buckled upper deck of the three-story structure. Witnesses recalled a terrifying rumbling sound followed by the sound of people screaming in response to the collapse.
