New Year's eve day 2025 stock market prediction: S&P 500 investors eye 'Santa Claus rally' but analysts warn risk of volatility
U.S. Stock Market indexes -- S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow Futures -- are heading for a muted New Year's eve day 2025 trading as futures are down in the early morning of December 31. U.S. S&P 500 e-mini futures are down 0.3 per cent, Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.4 per cent, Dow futures were down 0.1 per cent on Wednesday. The S&P 500 and the Dow are set for their eighth consecutive month of gains, their longest ‍monthly winning streak since 2017. Trading volumes remained thin in the holiday-truncated week, which analysts expect could heighten market volatility.

Stocks fell slightly on Wall Street as trading for 2025 nudges closer to the finish line. The S&P 500 slipped 0.1 per cent on Tuesday while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq dipped 0.2 per cent. Even with three straight days of small losses, the S&P 500 is on track for an annual gain of more than 17 per cent.

The more notable action was again in the commodities markets. Gold, silver and copper all resumed their ascent after steep declines a day earlier. The price of gold rose 1.4 per cent and copper gained 4.4 per cent. Silver posted the sharpest increase with a jump of 10.9 per cent.

For the year, S&P 500 is up 1,014.61 points, or 17.3 per cent. Dow Jones is up 5,822.84 points, or 13.7 per cent. Nasdaq is up 4,108.29 points, or 21.3 per cent. Russell 2000 is up 270.43 points, or 12.1 per cent.

Some investors eye a "Santa Claus rally", in which the S&P 500 typically posts gains over the last five trading days of the year and the first two of January, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.
