New study reveals hidden causes of heart attacks in younger women-here's what you should know
A Mayo Clinic study reveals heart attacks in younger women often stem from overlooked causes beyond clogged arteries. Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and stress-related triggers like infections play significant roles. Identifying the...

The findings show that treating all cases the same way could make some patients more likely to get hurt.
Why do younger women have different kinds of heart attacks?
Some shocking information regarding heart attacks in younger adults, particularly women, has been revealed by a recent Mayo Clinic study that may alter our understanding and approach to treating these dangerous occurrences.
Most people believe that clogged arteries are the cause of heart attacks. That is primarily true for older adults, but doctors haven't given enough consideration to other causes of heart attacks in younger people under 65, particularly women, as per a report.
Examining more than 15 years of data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, this study, which was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, discovered some startling trends in the factors that cause heart attacks in these younger adults.

First, the most common cause of heart attacks is still artery-clogging plaque, or atherosclerosis. The worst part is that, although it was responsible for roughly 75% of heart attacks in men under 65, it only caused roughly 47% of them in women under 65. This indicates that over half of heart attacks in women are caused by various, lesser-known factors.
What part does SCAD play in heart attacks?
SCAD, or spontaneous coronary artery dissection, is one of those "hidden" causes. This occurs when a coronary artery tear occurs suddenly, obstructing blood flow and resulting in blood clots without any plaque accumulation. Younger women, who typically appear healthy otherwise, are particularly susceptible to SCAD.
The frightening thing is that SCAD is frequently overlooked or confused with a normal plaque-induced heart attack, and if doctors treat it like a heart attack with stents or surgery, it may cause more harm than good. According to this study, women are almost six times more likely than men to have SCAD.
How do stress-related triggers raise risks?
This study also identified heart attacks brought on by stressors such as infections or anemia as another unconventional cause. These triggers seem to be responsible for what you might call "stress heart attacks," which were the second most frequent cause in this area overall and had the highest death rates (roughly 33%) over a five-year period.
This indicates that individuals with heart attacks brought on by serious infections actually had a harder time surviving than those with traditional heart disease.
Following a thorough review of cases, the study also found that less than 3% of heart attacks are "truly unexplained." The good news is that most heart attacks have recognizable causes, which enables medical professionals to create more effective treatments.
Why is all of this important?
This study emphasizes how important it is to identify the precise cause of a heart attack rather than only treating its symptoms. Treatments may be less successful or even dangerous when medical professionals don't understand the underlying cause.
For instance, a person with SCAD may be given a stent that they do not require, which would expose them to additional risks. Knowing the true cause of a heart attack can help prevent future attacks and provide safer, more intelligent care.

This study reminds us that heart attacks are not all the same. Our ability to protect people's hearts, especially younger women who might not fit the typical heart attack mold, will improve as we gain more knowledge about these hidden causes. Never be afraid to push for answers and ask questions if something seems strange. Understanding the cause of a heart attack can save lives.
