New study on Ozempic reveals shocking effects on eating habits

A new study into GLP-1RA drugs provides previously unknown insights into the impact this class of drugs may have on eating habits. The study was helmed by the US Department of Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness.

Ozempic, the drug that was originally designed for the treatment of diabetes, has popularly come to be known as a weight loss drug, even though it has not been approved for weight-management. It belongs to a family of drugs called semaglutide, which also comprises of Mounjaro and Wegovy.

What are Ozempic and Wegovy?

While both Ozempic and Wegovy are manufactured by the same company, only the latter is authorised to be sold as a weight-management drug. Over the years, some studies have shown that semaglutide may benefit cardiovascular health in humans.

Drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro are glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA). These drugs function by imitating the human body's natural response to food in order to reduce appetite and decelerate the process of digestion.

Study reveals new insights into GLP-1RAs

A new study into GLP-1RA drugs provides previously unknown insights into the impact this class of drugs may have on eating habits. The study was helmed by the US Department of Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness. The sample size of the study was 1,955 individuals. The participants were divided into four groups.

Here's how the study was conducted

While one group was composed of people who were actively using GLP-1RAs, another group included past users of the drug. Meanwhile, a third group was solely composed of people who were planning on taking the drug. The last group was made up of people who neither used GLP-1RAs in the past and nor were planning to use it in the future.

"Results show that consumers currently taking a GLP-1RA consume significantly fewer calories than the other groups surveyed, and calorie reduction while taking a GLP-1RA for weight loss could be around 720 to 990 calories," the research team wrote in their published paper, according to ScienceAlert.

GLP-1RA users showed reduction in cravings for processed foods

Active users of GLP-1RA reportedly exhibited the highest tendency to cut back on processed foods, beef, sugary drinks, and refined grains in their diet. This was in addition to the reduction in calories observed in the group's individuals. There was, however, a surge in their consumption of fruits and leafy vegetables, along with the intake of water.

As per ScienceAlert, active GLP-1RA users reported that they still craved high-calorie items like processed foods and sugary beverages like before, but simply chose not to consume them. The reason behind that could not be ascertained.

Previous findings about GLP-1RAs

Some clinical trials conducted in the past demonstrated that the cardiovascular benefits of GLP-1RAs were limited to individuals who had already suffered a heart attack or stroke or who were already suffering from cardiovascular conditions.
