The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has cleared the air over the speculations of $1,390 direct deposit relief payments and other new stimulus check amounts in September 2025 for low- and middle-income taxpayers. Debunking all the rumors, the IRS has confirmed that there are no such plans and officials have also said that the speculation spreading on social media are false. According to media reports, there has been no official confirmation from Congress or the IRS to support these claims.

Notably, there were three prior stimulus checks tied to COVID-era stimulus programs, the third and last of which had an April 15, 2025, deadline to claim, according to media reports.

What was the eligibility for three stimulus checks?

The first stimulus check was for up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples, plus $500 per qualifying child under the age of 17. While the second stimulus check was up to $600 per individual, $1,200 for married couples and $600 per qualifying child under 17. The third stimulus check was for $1,400 per eligible individual and married couples filing jointly received an additional $1,400 for each qualifying dependent.

Difference between rebate and stimulus check

A rebate is a partial refund of the purchase price that a consumer paid, often after fulfilling certain conditions. On the other hand, a stimulus check is a direct payment to encourage spending and stimulate the economy by putting money directly into the consumers' hands. Meanwhile, there were multiple states that were giving out inflation relief checks to residents who paid higher sales taxes due to inflation. The states included New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Colorado.
