New research reveals how Canada’s aircraft interceptor dream came crashing down
At the peak of the Cold war, Canada had abruptly stopped its Avro Arrow program. The Royal Canadian Air Force decided not to induct the aircraft into service even after its successful flight.

Development of CF-105:
The Avro Arrow was a direct response to the nuclear threats from the erstwhile USSR. Many of the Soviet aircrafts could fly through the Arctic carrying nuclear payloads and enter North America. Also Read: U.S Presidential Election 2024: Joe Biden likely to lose by a landslide, says former Obama advisor
It was in this regard that in 1952, the Royal Canadian Force put out a requirement for an interceptor capable of Mach 2 speeds and being able to fly at an attitude of 50,000 feet. The development of this aircraft started in 1955 and on October 4, 1957, the aircraft was rolled out on the same day USSR launched Sputnik. This aircraft which was to be put into service was disbanded in 1959.
Possible reasons:
There could be multiple reasons as to why the program was disbanded. Firstly, the effects of cold war were beginning to reduce and the authorities did not want to provoke any further tensions with a super power. It is suspected that the US misled Canada in this regard. Apparently, the US did not want Canada to develop and aircraft better than theirs. The Canadian Intelligence too has been accused of misleading the country’s Air Force. This was done apparently to support the government’s decision to disband the program. One such paper which was published in 2023 showed a clear link supporting the fact that the intelligence created theories to support the government’s decision.
