New Orleans metro hit by a tornado; damage assessments ongoing
A highly destructive tornado hit New Orleans, Arabi and Jefferson and caused significant damage. Storm conditions have persisted for some time, and the tornado path was from Texas to Louisiana.

A severe weather condition evolved as a warning was already in place from coast to coast. Within twenty minutes, everything changed, according to Mitti Hicks of Fox Weather News reporting from New Orleans. The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for the parishes of Orleans and Jefferson, so people were hopefully on guard. Hicks said the blizzard was so intense that he couldn’t see beyond thirty feet.
Scott Walker, the Councilman for Jefferson Parish, said that the tornado formed in the West Bank and then moved onto New Orleans after crossing the river. Damages have been reported in the Gretna and old Gretna areas. The Winn Dixie store, off the West Bank Expressway, which connects to the Crescent City area, has been significantly damaged the store with the roof collapsing.
In Arabi, a tornado formed around 4 PM, and debris collected by the supercell hit a few cars, according to Cindy DeLucca Hernandez. She was in her car and got hit by some flying debris.
New Orleans has been barraged by tornadoes for years and was hit by two significant spirals in March this year. A 25-year-old man was killed, damaging many buildings and infrastructure along its path. One of the two supercells was rated EF3 by the NWS and was seen on an 11-mile path in Arabi and the Lower Ninth Ward. This time, the damaged areas were in Orleans, St. Bernard, St. Tammany and Jefferson parishes. Most of these saw damage again this season. Arabi was hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and has been hit again twice this year, nearby in March and mid-December.
According to NWS, close to 36 tornadoes have been reported since Tuesday, and it is in areas from Oklahoma and Texas and eastward into Louisiana and Mississippi.
