Smartphone ban in US schools: A new law passed in Michigan means some Americans, specifically schoolchildren, will soon be forced to put their smartphones away during large parts of the day, as per a report.

New law could ban smartphones in parts of the US: Which students will be affected by the Michigan smartphone ban

Under House Bill 4141, K-12 public schools across the state will be required to ban smartphones during classroom instruction, as per The Sun report. The change is aimed at improving students’ concentration, strengthening in-person connection, and addressing growing concerns around mental health.

Why flip phones are exempt under the new law

The rule won’t apply to all mobile devices, though. Flip phones are exempt, meaning students will still be allowed to carry basic phones that don’t offer social media, apps, or constant notifications.

How schools will enforce smartphone restrictions

While some Michigan schools have already introduced their own phone restrictions, the new legislation makes it mandatory statewide. School districts will now be required to develop and enforce their own policies to block smartphone use during teaching time. Districts can also choose to expand the ban to other parts of the school day, such as breaks, if they want.

Exceptions allowed under Michigan’s classroom phone ban

There are a few built-in exceptions. Students will still be allowed to use phones during lunch and non-instructional periods, as well as in cases where devices are needed for medical reasons, adaptive technology, or specific educational purposes.

Supporters say smartphone bans improve focus and mental health

Supporters of the law say it’s already proven effective where similar policies exist. District officials report fewer classroom distractions, improved focus, and progress in tackling online bullying.

Michigan Education Association spokesman Thomas Morgan said, “If we can pull them away from the constant stream of comments and the dopamine hit from the likes so they can focus on things they need to graduate high school, we consider that a victory,” as quoted by The Sun.

Students push back against an all-out smartphone ban

Not everyone is convinced an outright ban is the right move. Some students argue the law goes too far and that teaching responsibility would be more effective than removing devices entirely.

One senior told The Detroit News, that, “We need boundaries, not banning,” as quoted by The Sun.

Another said, “They should teach you to be a little bit more responsible with them and take more accountability,” adding, “Not just take them away completely," as quoted in the report.

The bill passed the state legislature by a wide margin of 99–10 and is scheduled to take effect at the start of the 2026–27 school year, giving districts time to prepare for a school day where smartphones are no longer a constant presence in the classroom.
