New James Bond actor confirmed — but there’s a jaw-dropping twist that has everyone talking
James Bond is returning, but this time, in an exciting form. IO Interactive officially confirmed that Irish actor Patrick Gibson will be into the shoes of 007 in its long awaited game, 007 First Light. The reveal came in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s latest State of Play showcase, along with a latest gameplay trailer that gave fans a detailed watch on the action.

This marks Bond’s initial significant return to consoles in more than a decade. Earlier in 2025, IO Interactive released the first trailer, showing the game as a third-person action-adventure. Fans have more information into what the studio states “a new standalone, re-imagined James Bond origin story,” concentrating on “the events that led an audacious young hero to become the best MI6 agent.”

Younger Bond’s Origin Story

Unlike the films, which have showcased Bond as a seasoned operative, 007 First Light takes players back to the starting. Gibson’s Bond is just 26 years, navigating on his journey to get his 00 status. The story will blend espionage, stealth, and high-octane action that pays homage to Ian Fleming’s classic spy while charting a bold fresh direction.

Who Is Patrick Gibson?

At just 30 years old, Patrick Gibson has already accomplished himself in film and television. He recently showcased a young Dexter Morgan in the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, getting into a role originally made popular by Michael C. Hall. Gibson has also starred in Netflix shows such as Shadow and Bone and The OA, both of which created strong fan followings. His other projects also include Tolkien, The Spanish Princess, and the crime drama Before We Die.

Though Irish by birth, Gibson has often performed roles that need an American accent. For 007 First Light, he pivoted to offer a sharp, British Bond accent, once again proving his uniqueness.

Fresh Take on Familiar Characters

Alongside Gibson, there is a portrayal of some of the franchise’s most iconic personalities. The cast includes:

  • Lennie James as John Greenway
  • Kiera Lester as Miss Moneypenny
  • Alastair Mackenzie as Q
  • Noémie Nakai as Miss Roth
Each character has been digitally modeled following the actors themselves, making sure that realistic performances bring energy to the Bond universe.

Does It Rival GoldenEye?

Fans who hope for a video game to match the cultural influence of the 1997 Nintendo 64 classic GoldenEye finally can celebrate. 007 First Light not only has a brand-new Bond but also reimagines classic MI6 favorites while introducing a new villain, a rogue 00 agent. With its cinematic combination and stealth-driven tasks, the game could become the most defining Bond experience since GoldenEye.

Release Details

007 First Light is set to release on March 27, 2026, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The multi-platform introduction shows IO Interactive’s desire to reach a global audience, offering a cinematic yet interactive experience that reinvents James Bond for the players globally.
