There will be a balance in the new budget, stated Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the leadership in Illinois. It will earmark $1 billion for a rainy day and keep another $1.8 billion as tax relief for the taxpayers.

Gov. Pritzker thanked House Speaker Chris Welch and Senate President Don Harmon for announcing a compassionate and responsible budget.

He stated that in the past few weeks and more so in the past 48 hours, they had taken part in a real give and take. It saw an honest compromise take place and, in all honesty, helped to hammer out a spending plan which is responsible fiscally. It would better the finances of Illinois and support the people who are genuinely in need of it.

The lawmakers state that the sales tax levied on groceries amounting to 1% will be suspended in the new fiscal year and will save approximately $400 million of the taxpayers' money.

The taxpayers will further save money by freezing the fuel tax levied by the state at $.39 per gallon till Jan 1, 2023. Approximately $70 million will be saved by the taxpayers. The fuel tax was about to increase due to inflation in July, but that will not happen now.

The budget also includes rebates for property taxes up to $300 for each household. Gov. Pritzker stated that there is also an expansion in the tax credit for earned income.
