A new bill was introduced on Monday in Congress, giving US President Donald Trump the authority to rename Greenland if negotiations with Denmark ever succeeded, as per a report.

Rep. Buddy Carter from Georgia proposed this bill, allowing Trump to buy the island and, if successful, to rename it "Red, White, and Blueland", reported Daily Mail. The legislation is yet to be passed in the House and the Senate.

Trump claimed America needed the island for security reasons, as per the report. The island is considered an attractive locale as it lies between the US and Russia, and is rich in rare earth minerals.

According to Daily Mail, Denmark holds nominal sovereignty over the island, an arrangement dating back to colonial times.

Denmark's prime minister has said repeatedly Greenland is "not for sale". Despite this denial, Trump has stood firm in wanting to acquire the island and even claimed that the people of Greenland would want to join the US.

Trump said "I think we're going to have it," as quoted by Daily Mail.

The US president's wish to acquire Greenland is not new. He originally floated the idea of acquiring Greenland in his first term in office when discussing the prospect with his senior advisers back in 2019. But he left office without making any movement toward acquiring the territory.

According to the report, the United States tried and failed to buy Greenland after World War II. While it did establish the Pituffik Space Base at the northern end of the island.
