Neutrogena recalls popular makeup remover wipes over bacterial contamination in four US states

Neutrogena has issued a voluntary recall of its Makeup Remover Ultra-Soft Cleansing Towelettes due to the detection of potentially harmful bacterial contamination in one specific product lot.

The affected wipes were sold in 50-count, 25-pack bundles and distributed across Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The recall follows an internal investigation that revealed contamination with Pluralibacter gergoviae, a bacterium from the Enterobacteriaceae family known for resistance to preservatives commonly used in cosmetic products.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified the recall as Class II, the second-highest risk level, indicating that while the risk of severe health consequences is low, there is a possibility of temporary or medically reversible adverse effects.


Pluralibacter gergoviae can cause infections in individuals with weakened immune systems, including respiratory illnesses, urinary tract infections, and sepsis, especially in hospital environments.

The recalled product can be identified by the lot code LOT 1835U6325A on packaging labeled “Neutrogena Makeup Remover Ultra-Soft Cleansing Towelettes.” Consumers are advised to immediately discontinue use of the product if they possess this specific lot and to switch to alternative makeup removal solutions.

Kenvue Brands, Neutrogena’s parent company, has not yet issued guidance on returns or refunds for the affected makeup wipes. Health experts urge caution, particularly for immunocompromised individuals, recommending they avoid the recalled product to prevent potential infections.

Consumers living in the affected states should check their products immediately and exercise caution in their skincare routines. Until further notice, opting for gentle cleansers or makeup removers without contamination risk is preferred.
